Hypoglycemia In The Treatment Of Patients With Diabetes Mellitus
Dr. Ş. Erol BOLUa
aEndokrinoloji ve Metabolizma Hastalıkları BD, GATA, ANKARA Hypoglycemia is a well-known complication of insulin therapy in patients with diabetes mellitus and also this risk increases as more aggressive glycemic goals are targeted. Treatment modalities that we use to manage hyperglycemia do not precisely mimic physiologic insulin secretion patterns. Hypoglycemia unawareness, missed meals, unplanned exercise, excess alcohol intake, age, stress, individual susceptibility, comorbid disease, history of prior hypoglycemic episodes, and nocturnal hypoglycemia can increase hypoglycemia risk. The unpleasant symptoms and negative consequences associated with hypoglycemia may result in significant anxiety and management problems in diabetics. We have to remember that hypoglycemia is preventable and generally simple to manage when it occurs. Keywords: Diabetes mellitus; diabetes complicationsTurkiye Klinikleri J Endocrin-Special Topics 2008, 1(1):92-100
