Diabetes Mellitus And Hyperlipidemia
Dr. Rıfat EMRALa
aEndokrinoloji ve Metabolizma Hastalıkları BD, Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Diabetes is a chronic illness that requires continuing medical care and patient self-management education to prevent acute complications and to reduce the risk of long-term complications. As part of the metabolic syndrome, dyslipidemia in type 2 diabetes is often present at the time of diagnosis. Typically, there is moderate hypertriglyceridaemia, low HDL cholesterol, and abnormal post-prandial lipaemia. Total and LDL cholesterol levels are similar to those in subjects without diabetes; however, LDL particles are small and dense, which is associated with increased atherogenicity. Today, target lipid levels have been reduced. First choice drugs to reduce LDL cholesterol are statins. When necessary, fibrates, niacin and ezetimibe could also be used, especially with the combination of statins. Keywords: Diabetes mellitus; hyperlipidemias; cardiovascular diseasesTurkiye Klinikleri J Endocrin-Special Topics 2008, 1(1):38-43
