aEndokrinoloji ve Metabolizma Hastalıkları BD, Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ISPARTA Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the important reasons of blindness in developed countries. It occurs about 5 years after diagnosis of type 1 diabetes, but may be present at diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. In the beginning one or more microaneurysms and dots haemorrhages appear in non-proliferative DR. In proliferative DR, retinal ischemia may lead to neovascular proliferation, then vitreeus haemorrhages and retinal detachment. Strict glycemia regulation and blood pressure control are the most important parameters in prevention of DR. Laser photocoagulation can often prevent blindness if the condition is detected early enough. Keywords: Diabetic retinopathy, cataract, glaucome, laser photocoagulationTurkiye Klinikleri J Endocrin-Special Topics 2008, 1(1):24-28
